Het is weer tijd voor een korte update over stichting Alona. Als het goed is heeft iedereen al eens iets hierover gelezen of gehoord, maar voor de zekerheid nog even een korte samenvatting:
Het leek ons fijn om vanuit Alona iets positiefs bij te dragen aan de wereld. Ruim 2 jaar geleden zijn we dan ook gestart met Stichting Alona en sindsdien proberen we per jaar een aantal jonge mensen met een uitzichtloze toekomst te helpen d.m.v. het aanbieden van een praktische en doelgerichte beroepsopleiding. De bedoeling is dat zij zo de handvaten krijgen om iets van hun leven te maken en waardoor ze beter voor zichzelf en uiteindelijk ook beter voor hun gezin kunnen gaan zorgen. Aangezien Alona Marketing al jaren goed samenwerkt met Rocketship Designs in Manilla en er in de Filipijnen helaas nog veel armoede is, leek het ons mooi om dit te combineren door kansarme studenten in de Filipijnen deze kans te bieden. Zij worden binnen 3/4 maanden opgeleid tot een vakspecialist, zoals bv. een Graphic Designer of PHP Developer.
Inmiddels heeft de 7e kandidaat (Rayson) zijn opleiding succesvol afgerond en is er weer een nieuwe kandidaat (Eirene) gestart. Hieronder nog een laatste update over Rayson en het einde van zijn training:
Rayson was a nursing student in Catanduanes, Bicol. He was eager to join the training program because he said he wants to have a fallback besides nursing, since it is very difficult to find work. He was very thankfull for the training that he had with the Alona Foundation and Rocketship. The training took around 4+ months instead of the usual 3 months, because he lost his grandfather after the 2nd month of training. He was keen enough to go back to training after this unfortunate event and continued the training.
Rayson learned graphic design. From designing posters, brochures, business cards and other types of marketing materials. He was taught about the basics of layout and design, typography and visual hierarchy. He mentioned that he realized it wasn’t an easy thing to do and every element, positioning and basically everything you put in a graphical composition has to have a meaning.
His mom is very sick and he was able to help treat his mom with his monthly allowances. He also saved up and helped his family providing with food. He is very grateful for the training and he says he wants to try out freelancing or work on freelance graphic design gigs in the future to support his family.
Via de huidige kandidaat Rayson is Robert in contact gekomen met de nieuwe kandidate genaamd Eirene. Hieronder een kort stukje (door Robert geschreven) over Eirene en haar achtergrond:
Eirene lives (just like Rayson) in Bicol, Philippines. Bicol is a province in the Philippines which is commonly hit by tropical storms because of its geographical location and therefor. Bicol is (together with Muslim-majority Bangsamoro) one of the poorest regions in the country.
Eirene is the daughter of a gardener in Bicol, Catanduanes. Eirene’s family is really not well of. In fact, her house is not fully built because of this storm that hit Catanduanes in 2020 in the middle of the pandemic. Because of the storm, they lost their home. They scavenged everything that they could from their destroyed home and tried to rebuild their home with the same materials. Of course, they haven’t completed it 100% yet, but at least they have roof over their heads right now.
She is excited for her training and said that this will help her a lot. And she hopes that after learning she can help provide for herself and her family and help rebuilding a home for themselves.
